| 1 As a youngster, Bertie was very neat and dapper, and had the nickname 'the Dart,' with something of an eye for the girls. Originally a storeman at the local Hackbridge factory in Hersham, he had a couple of bad years with first a broken leg (football) and later a mastoid operation. In 1934 Bertie joined Vickers Aircraft Co at Weybridge and the later 1930s were probably his happiest years. Subsequently he spent nearly forty years in the aircraft industry, working on over 20 different aircraft, from the biplane Hawker Hart, through wartime bombers such as the Wellington, to jet prop airliners like the Viscount, and pure jet aircraft such as the VC10. He finished his career as a skilled aircraft fitter in 1971 working on the supersonic Concorde, but until that year had never flown on an aircraft. 2 In a low level raid by Ju88s on 4 September 1940 on the Weybridge factory, Bertie was badly injured, being bodily thrown some thirty yards by an explosion beneath him. Although physically he recovered, he suffered personality disturbance for many years, only resuming his normal genial self in later life. In youth and early adult life he had been a very sociable man, a keen local footballer, a prize winning snooker player, and a skilled craftsman in wood and metal. 3 Thoroughly extrovert, he was at his best in social circumstances; a member of the Comrades Club of Hersham in his youth, he always preferred going out to pubs and clubs to staying at home. Often this was with his two nearest brothers, George and Frank, with whom he always had an on-again off-again friendship. Not until retirement did this pattern change to a more sedentary existence. A heavy smoker in his early years, he was always prone to bronchitis, later contracting lung cancer 4 Lived first at Rose Cottage, Burwood Road Hersham, moving to 58 Queens Road, a Victorian semi-detached, after i was born. Finally in 1977 we persuaded them to move next door to us in Bracknell - a good move, since Dad died just over a year later. | Harris, Herbert Edward (I518)

| 1 Bill was a navy man, at battle of Jutland in WW1. Also on many ships in WW2, includingNorth Sea run to Archangel. 2 Bill's family lived opposite the Harrises in Thistlecroft Road. Old Mrs White took a dislike to Mary, and Bill was thrown out by his parents when he announced he was to marry her! 3 None of the White's attended the wedding, and that day, old Mrs White went round and drew the blinds over all her windows as for a funeral! | WHITE, William Charles (I2286)

| 1 George was a small man with a limp caused from an accident in his youth. He married a well built and formidable lady. Very streetwise, very sociable, often to be found in the pub, sometimes acting as a bookies runner before betting shops were legalised in the UK. 2 Always had a cheery word and a tease for me but was very wary of his wife! | Harris, George Henry (I516)

| 1 Maud was the third of four girls in the Howlett family, and admits to having been a 'real terror' as a girl. She always felt that her mother was disappointed that she was not a boy, but fought her own corner. She was seriously ill with diptheria as a 4 year old child (six weeks in an isolation hospital), and was often sickly until at 17 she had scarlet fever (more isolation) which she says kept her fit fot years. 2 She was briefly in domestic service, then apprenticed to a dressmaker and tailor. She became very skilled, and was consulted professionally into her middle years. But as quite a young woman she had joined the aircraft industry, sewing canvas for the wing and fuselage covers, and later helping with the geodetic construction of aircraft such as the Wellington. 3 During the war she did cleaning jobs, served in a small electronic store, and generally turned her hand to almost anything, She was also the one in the family to whom everyone turned for support in trouble, and in their later years nursed her mother and father, acted as surrogate confidante for her dead sister's children, administering the estates of both her father, and her youngest sister. 4 She also steered her husband back to health and subsequent normality after the disastrous effects of his being bombed in 1940. Her quiet and unassuming manner always concealed real drive and determination, even in the face of personal illness . 5 She had cancer when in her late seventies, and survived a number of operations and associated radiotherapy. For the last three years, she attended the Paul Bevan Hospice at Ascot, becoming a sort of mascot. It gave her a new lease of life, and she felt useful, able to help others because she had been through the problems of cancer. She was a good listener, often offering pertinent advice. 6 She always had some craft on hand, dressmaking, knitting, crochet, embroidery, pewter work, and in later years, right up to her death, tapestry. Probably her proudest moment was at 89 when the Queen & Duke of Edinburgh inspected her tapestry at the official opening of the hospice. 7 Fastidious in person, neatly dressed, and energetic to the last, she lived independently, doing her own housework and laundry, with little support from us, until a few weeks before her death. 8 Her most quoted motto when I was young was ‘The Lord helps those who help themselves’ and it seems to have carried her through her later years. In the last two decades she was often lonely, and, I suspect frequently frightened of the future, but she managed to keep a positive attitude, and made many new friends in Bracknell. | Howlett, Beatrice Maud (I524)

| 1 Usually described as formidable, Lil was red-headed Manchester Irish. A big woman, often combative, she could also be generous and kind-hearted to unfortunates. Liked her drop of gin! She met George when he was in the army (non-combatant) in the First World War. 2 A;ways had a soft spot for me! | Brennan, Lillian (Lily) Monica (I522)

| 1 A lovely bubbly warm personality, Joyce coped admirably with a large family, including triplet boys. 2 Originally in Dunedin, they retired to Blenheim, but have recently moved back to Christchurch to be near their daughters, both now being in their 80s. 3 Successfully reared triplet boys as well as three older children. | NIELSON, Joyce Isobel (I2304)

| 1 Arthur served with Anzac forces in France in 1914-18 war, wounded in 1917 and sent to recuperate at mt felix hospital, Walton-on-Thames, where he met and married Dolly. they returned to NZ in 1919 when young Arthur was 2 years old. 2 He was first a gravedigger, later a parks gardener before going to work on theDunedin trams | Scoones, Arthur Edward (I521)
| 1 Bill was a very quiet self-contained man. He served with the ANZAC forces over here, but had not, I think, been a P.O.W. alongside Arthur Scoones. Ref Number: 430 | POTTER, Arthur William (I2348)
| 1 Born in England but went to New Zealand as a small lad. 2 Served with the NZ expeditionary force in World War II. Captured during the Greek campaign in Thessalonika after nearly completing an epic escape.. Held as a P.O.W. in Italy and later Germany until 1945. On his release spent some time in UK with Bertie and Maud. 3. Ran a successful butcher's shop in Dunedin. | SCOONES, Arthur Ernest (I2280)
| 1 Don was another one of the quiet ones. He was bright and went to a grammar school, getting successful GSCs. 2 When we were younger we kept in touch, although we rarely saw each other physically. he too had something of his mother's quality of serenity, and was obviously much liked and respected by his workmates and colleagues 3 His sudden death seems to have been a real loss to the family Ref Number: 265 | WHITE, Donald Oswald (I2291)
| 1 Doris was the oldest and one of the liveliest of Mary's children. 2 During World War 2 she was a sergeant in the W.A.A.F. She met Pat when he was a GI over her, married him and returned to the States as a GI Bride just after the war. 3 They lived on the West coast, mostly in Washington state and Doris very quickly became the typical American emancipated matron. 4 She came back to visit a number of times and corresponded regularly with my Mum in her early years overseas. We alsoo visited them in Yakima a couple of times after Pat had retired 5 She died a few days before their planned Golden Wedding celebration. Ref Number: 261 | WHITE, Doris Mary (I2287)

| 1 Elsie was the youngest daughter, a bit fey. My Dad was said by Mum to be very protective of her when young. I don't think he rated Frank much. Certainly there was little or no contact after her death | Harris, Elsie (I520)
| 1 George was a very sociable animal. He had survived the war in the Libyan desert and Italy, and was grateful. At the same time he felt, with other servicemen that they were 'owed.' He was popular, and a bit of a socialist and did well as Union Secretary, because he could drink with the boys and keep his head. He made me very welcome on my first visit to NZ, giving me the grand tour of South Island in a single weekend a totally memorable experience.. | SCOONES, George Stewart (I2281)
| 1 George was his father re-incarnated. Same perky approach to life same rough and ready humour and similarly stree smart. Just in a bigger frame. 2 After his father died, my dad took to him as a replacement, and they shared some of the same interests. Being younger, George was less inclined to argue with Dad so they probably got on better! | HARRIS, George (I2272)
| 1 Jean was the fun loving member of the family, always cheerful, and ready for a party. 2 She met Bill Potter at a party given for Arthur Scoones at our house, when he came to us on his release from P.O.W. camp in 1945. There were several of these parties and my main recollection of Bill and Jean is of them sitting out on thstairs smoking and chatting, oblivious to the party - so unlike Jean! 3 Jean went ou to NZ to marry Bill and later had a family in Palmerston North. Her youngest daughter Elisabeth was crippled from birth, a great tragedy for them all, eventually dying at age 14. 4 Bill only lasted a few years after that, and Jean, who had been so bright as a youngster had a rather lonely and cheerless old age. Ref Number: 262 | WHITE, Edith Jean (I2288)

| 1 Mary was the middle girl, and the next oldest to my dad. She was the one who looked out for him when young, and they always remained pretty close. Of all my cousins I think we were closest to he family, and I was always given a warm welcome at 22 Rodney Road, Walton-on-Thames, if I cycled across to see them, even tho' with a large family, they were often hard up. 2 Mary had a quality of serenity that enabled her to sail through many of life's problems, and she was often the peacemaker on the not infrequent occasions when Dad fell out with one of his brothers! | HARRIS, Mary Louisa 'Polly' (I2276)
| 1 Rene was small and petite and active, one very lively lady who lived life to the full. 2 In mid-life she contracted cancer, but fought it long and bravely for many years | ROSENBROCK, Irene Mary (I2319)
| 1 Sidney was the brightest of George's boys and did quite well in life. 2. He had lost an arm through an accident when he was young, and always felt a bit self conscious about it | HARRIS, Sydney Frederick (I2273)
| 1 Still a very formidable matriach when I met her in 1967. 2 She still ruled the family from her cottage in N.E.valley, Dunedin, but was much loved as Nana by all the grandchildren. 3 She did enjoy a day at the races. 4 For a time, she was an honorary JP in Dunedin; a fact of which she was very proud, though she modestly said she thought it was on account of Arthur's union activity while alive! | Harris, Ellen Elizabeth (I515)
| 1 Tui was a lovely motherly NZ housewife who didn't want to be anything else. She enjoyed cooking and the domestic chores like jam-making, bottling fruit, etc.She made a superb Pavlova, and collected apostle teaspoons from around the world. | TREVELLA, Tui (I2307)
