'Jervis Bay' and first worked as a share farmer at Froston with dairy
cattle
and then cotton growing. After a drought Robert moved to Mackay. Tried

cane farming at Walkerston and in 1935 began as an electrical
assistant. He
was a machine man in the quarry for the Harbour Board and prepared
explosives.
He obtained an electrical linesman ticket and eventually became
installation
electrician. Rode his bicycle to work and tended his roses in his
spare time.
