80 A WIFE AND A CORPSE IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS - On Wednesday morning last a happy partysurrounded the hymeneal altar when Caroline Butcher became the wife of Edward Freeman, farmer. After the ceremony the party wended their way to the home of a brother of the bride. On the way home theyoung wife complained of a pain in the body, and shortly after her arrival went to bed, but rose and joinedthe party at the tea table, but still suffering shortly retired again, and was watched with great solicitude byher many friends. No danger being apprehended a medical man was not called in. At early morn some ofthe friends left for home, while others watched the young bride, and as the day was breaking discoveredthat she had breathed her last. The deceased was highly respected and had been for many years a memberof the Congregational Church and choir.

Inquest in "Geelong Advertiser" 21 February 1855 reads: "The deceased
child
had been sent down to the river, near the pumps, for a kettle of
water, in
in company with his brother, when his hat blew off his head into the
water.
Deceased in attempting to reach the hat, fell in and was drowned."
Arrived
with his uncle Josiah Turpin on "James Baines" 12 Feb 1855. This ship
had a
record passage to Melbourne on its maiden voyage, but destroyed by
fire 1857.
